School leadership factors and their relations with performance. A study with public school principals of the state of Minas Gerais/Brazil
Abstract

This article presents the results of a survey of predominantly quantitative methodology on the factors of school leadership and their correlation with the performance of students in basic education public schools of the state of Minas Gerais. The responses of 1,486 school principals in a dimensionality analysis, have presented four factors of school leadership: Communication, Focus on Learning, Administrative Practices and Attitudes Contrary to the School Leadership. These factors were correlated to student proficiency, from simple and multiple linear regressions. The Focus on Learning and Attitudes Contrary to the School Leadership factors appear to be related to the proficiency in Portuguese Language and Mathematics for the 5th and 9th grades of elementary school. The Attitudes Contrary to the School Leadership factor is the only one present in the 3rd year of high school. In all grades and in two areas of assessed knowledge, this factor predicts drop in proficiency.
