The Extension is considered as one of the core functions of the University. In this paper we will approach briefly the concept of Extension, then move on to review some of the experiences in this line of work at different universities. We will make a special mention of the proposed Service-Learning as a tool that contributes to this function; and will specifically approach some of the results obtained in the thesis: "Service-learning (S-L) at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU): on the way to its institutionalization". This research has focused on the study of various dimensions, yet here we will focus on those elements most closely linked to the University extension. A study combining various research tools and techniques such as the questionnaire and discussion groups allowed us to approach these elements. The study used a sample of 154 students, 11 lectures and 14 partners. The protagonists of these projects value the contribution of S-L to the development of the University extension function; however, they point to the need to leap from individual experiences to a more orderly, systematic implementation of it.
