The importance of having effective assessment resources for online education environments is stressed, and with this aim a methodology that allowed building performance assessment instruments for an online course of psychology is presented. The assessment proposal involves developing objective assessment instruments derived from cognitive task analyses that model educational domains. The assessment strategy arises from an analysis of the competencies of a domain, leading to the identification of the constituent cognitive skills and mental models integrating elements of the competencies. By building the cognitive model of the domain, the elements for assessment are also generated. Validation processes for instrument creation under this view are described.
