    .Abstract

The purpose of this work is to present the results of a diagnosis that identifies the particular aspects of the evaluation of teaching in the public universities of Mexico. The key informants were the people in charge of operating the institutional teaching evaluation programs of the mentioned institutions. Three main sources of information were used: a questionnaire in line, an essay and a seminary-workshop. The integration of the information allowed the detection of the origins of the teaching evaluation, the basic characteristics of the processes and their administration, the use of the results and the impact of the policies on this activity. Additionally some actions are identified which can grant greater sense to the evaluation of the teaching performance for each one of the participants, managers, professors and students; besides the local aspects to consider in the design of this type of programs in the future.
