The objective of this study is to elaborate and validate an explicative model of the academic achievement of the Spanish Language for a random sample of secondary students of third grade in Baja California (Mexico). For that purposes, students’ and school´s subgroups are obtained through tree decision techniques, followed by a differential study performed on each of the just mentioned. With the obtained results of this first analysis stage, a linear hierarchic model is elaborated and adjusted to explain the performance in function to diverse variables in both, the students’ and the education center’s level. Additionally, the results suggest that, in spite of the existing socio-economical differences, the predictors and relevant variables are different in the groups with extreme values. Accordingly a regression model is elaborated for these extreme groups. For the design and implementation of improvement actions and programs it is really important to keep in mind this differential effect, it is necessary to considerate that these variables operate as learning opportunities only in some subgroups, even if they are small and extreme; however if not considered, the improvement actions to be designed for this sectors (which are the most disadvantaged) will be unfocused and the outcomes will not be useful. |
