This essay makes an historic and critic approximation with a future perspective about the importance of educational evaluation process in Ecuadorian universities, in a new institutional and normative context. The article explores the experiences of “Consejo Nacional de Evaluación y Acreditación de la Educación Superior, CONEA” (the national accreditation agency), with the regulations of National Constituent Assembly, and how these experiences could be used to tune and fortify the (new) evaluation and accreditation process with the new agency “Consejo de Evaluación, Acreditación y Aseguramiento de la Calidad de la Educación Superior, CEAACES” in concordance with the (new) Ecuadorian Constitution of 2008. This process constitutes part of the foundations of the new knowledge society. To reach such a society, it is necessary to reconsider the appropriate role of universities and their social purpose. It also requires to recognize that the evaluation process doesn’t´ search for guilty, but intents to be a real process of improvement for the benefit of citizens.
