Continuous assessment, an incentive that increases motivation for learning

Gabriela Monforte García and Gabriela M. Farias Martínez
.Abstract

Learning is the process to foster the ability to analyze, compare, prove and test until reaching a conclusion capable of relating a study hypothesis to observed evidences (Peñaloza y Vargas, 2006). To achieve this, previous knowledge, that adds conceptual support to new content, and the student's disposition are required to make a structured link between both of them. One way to enforce this objective is through continuous evaluation, given that this methodology enables the student to have control over his/her learning process. As a result of this research, the use of continuous evaluation is proposed as a way to increase the student's motivation for learning and, as a consequence, it's expected to observe an increase in the student's performance indicators in the Statistical Methods for decision making course. To validate the results of this research, a comparison was made between a group of students that was evaluated through the traditional method and one that was evaluated continuously. The quantitative findings of this research, through grades, and qualitative ones, through perception, show evidence to state that continuous evaluation contributes in the improvement of the student´s performance.
