Teaching Competence Model Assessment at the Iberoamerican University of Mexico City

Javier Loredo y Raúl Romero
.Abstract

Members of the Research Network for the Evaluation of Teachers designed a Model for the Evaluation of Teacher Competencies (METC), which is applicable to higher education.  After designing and discussing this model with specialists, the following work consisted of subjecting this model to the scrutiny of the participants, which included both public and private university professors.  In this article, the voices of the professors at one private university are heard.  Their voices represent different areas of expertise; their opinions are relevant because they have been recognized for their strengths, their full-time commitment to the university, their wealth of experiences, and their records of positive evaluation.  This research was conducted through a seminar-workshop in which the most relevant elements of the competencies for higher education proposed by METC were reviewed, in the context of La Universidad Iberoamericana. In each of the sessions, the model categories were reviewed and contrasted with elements of institutional context, such as the professors’ teaching, research, and professional experience, in their respective disciplines.  The professors were in agreement with the majority of the indicators proposed by METC and not only considered their application viable, but believed they would be a contribution to the evaluation of university professors.
