Failure of the Young in Middle School Education.
Who Abandons Lyceum in Chile, and Why?

Abstract

The scholar abandonment and dropout rates in Chile shows lower figures among other countries in the region. However, its characteristics and distribution are a stark reflection of the system weakness and, in particular, off it deep inequality. More than 70% of young people, between 14 and 17 years old that dropout from school, belong to the poorest percentiles of the population, diminishing -even more- their possibilities of access to knowledge and social mobility. The present text, along with a characterization of the students with greater risk of desertion, identifies and explores the factors between and within school that plays a significant role in the decision of young students to dropout permanently from schools in Chile. The results shows that disruption of the school careers of young Chileans students, it’s a response and a consequence of scholar failure, phenomenon that is decided and built mainly from school. For the system and the educational policy is essential to understand how the dropout phenomena is developed and how, the decision of leaving school is validated and taken, last link in a long history of failures.
